[Humans of GMBA 2022] #2 Hyojin (Jerry) Lee - South Korea

HyoJin (Jerry) Lee is the Vice President of the GMBA Class of 2022's Student Council.

Born and raised in South Korea.

1. Why did you choose Yonsei GMBA?

I worked for KT, one of the representative telecommunication company in Korea, for 10 years as a wireless communication specialist. After 10 years of spending money in the field of technology, I want to make money for my company. To do this, I needed a career change from a network engineer to strategic investment, and this career change required me to pursue an MBA.

At KT, there is this system where employees who have worked for more than 5 years and with high performance will be sent to domestic or U.S. MBA through several rounds of interviews. Fortunately, I was selected as one of the employees to pursue an MBA course after going through fierce competition within the company. Initially, I was prepared to pursue my MBA in the US, however, the COVID-19 situation has gotten worse during early 2020 and I was not allowed to leave for the US for my MBA.

In the meantime, I have found the Yonsei Global MBA as one of the domestic MBA courses that are supported by my company. Even if I don't go to the US, I can study English with friends from different backgrounds and from all over the world, and the professors were all coming from prestigious universities in the US.

Also, the Yonsei GMBA program provides various overseas experience programs and during the last semester, they provided opportunities for the American exchange students. Yonsei University is my alma mater, so I became more attracted to Yonsei GMBA and have chosen to come here without any hesitation.

2. What do you like about your graduate school life?

The best thing about Yonsei University's GMBA life is the friends with who I have classes together.

I have friends coming from various countries such as Europe (Germany, France, Belgium), South America (USA, Honduras), Asia (Palestine, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Uzbekistan, China, and Korea) to rely on each other and have an interesting and fun school life together in Korea. I am so happy to make 45 friends from these various countries after pursuing the Yonsei GMBA program.

The next best thing is learning about Economics and Business Administration courses that I had no prior knowledge of before. As an Engineer majoring in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, while doing my MBA, I feel like I myself is growing in many aspects as I have acquired various knowledge in the business field such as Marketing, Branding, Business Strategy, Accounting, and Finance. While doing my MBA, my English skills have improved a lot as I use English to communicate with my classmates all the time. I hope the COVID-19 situation gets better in 2021 so that I can meet my GMBA classmates more often in events or in the classroom.

3. When was the last time you tried something new?

The last time I tried something new was when I started playing golf last September. As I have passed my mid-30s, my friends around me started to play golf a lot. I have always wanted to start playing golf as a sport, but I couldn't easily start a new sport because of my busy work and marriage life. While studying at Yonsei GMBA, I have more free time than when I was working at a company.

In addition, there is a golf club in the Yonsei GMBA and it helped me build friendships through golf. It has only been about 3 months since I have started playing golf, and although I have never been on the field, I've been taking golf lessons for 1~2 hours every day. Recently, I played screen golf with my friends and it was very fun. In 2021, I want to improve my skills through the golf club in the MBA. If there is anyone who is hesitating to learn golf, I recommend you to start now. Let's have fun playing golf with me this year!
